Original Petromax lantern: The "original" versions (Aida, Hipolito, Geniol, & Petromax) were designed by the Germans since the early 1900's. These pressurized, kerosene lanterns were invented to be the most reliable, easiest to use. "Original" Petromax lanterns are not intended for multi-fuel use. Petromax Lanterns sold on E-Bay and Web sites today or not Made in German and should be use only with Kerosene !! Also Geniol lanterns are manufactured in China to. A company, located in Germany, is Distributing lanterns to the U.S. Just because they are “coming from” Germany, does  Not mean manufactured in Germany. Blue knobs will fade and gold lettering will wash out with any fuel.

The first lanterns developed, named Petromax were used by the German armies before and during World War Two. The military significance of a lantern that would burn liquid fuels from diesel oil to kerosene, made the lantern very useful. Also developed were heaters and stoves for the individual soldier and up to whole companies. These three items gave the German army the benefit of heat, light and a way to prepare food with the use of liquid fuel.

However, in the 1960's a Petromax lantern was developed for "Petro". BriteLyt first company to make Methanol / Ethanol Lanterns and Stoves
