Good Start |
So I just received my new 500cp brass lantern this week. It's beautiful! I have 2 problems that I think are related:
1. When I pressured up my lantern and started heat up I noticed that gas was already coming out of the needle even though I had the flow shut off. When I tried to clean the vaporizer by doing the 12-to-6-to-12 thing as shown on the video I had no luck. The lantern would still run a little bit even though I turned it off and waited for a few minutes. 2. After burn in and running my lantern for a bit I turn it off with and relight. Every time the mantle would blow out even thought it was already hardened. Could this be because of excess fuel leaking into the vaporizer assembly as described above? I'm not sure where to go from here. I called britelyt and they generously offered to send me some more mantles. Does this mean that I have a defective vaporizer assembly? -Mike |

Hello,
No if the mantle had got wet that can cause the problem, unless you change the #50 to a alcohol #50 then you would blow out mantles if turned on to high, but you would not be able to run any fuel but alcohol in the lantern. Always preburn the mantle when preheating the lantern ,do not preburn the mantle and then preheat the lantern. God Bless!! |

Thanks for the fast response. I pre-burned the mantle exactly as you have described as being the proper way 3 times and all 3 mantles blew out on the second lighting. Thanks again!

Hi, and thanks for your fast response! I actually did preburn the mantle the correct way as you have described 3 times and all three blew out on the second burn when they were already hardened. |

Hello,
Not sure of your problem as were not have this problem, if fuel leaks out onto the mantle before it lights then this could be the problem. God Bless!! |

Hey there Mike, Try an idea from a collector of antique lamps. You mention 'hardened' here; the mantles aren't really 'hard,' they burn to a delicate ash. This ash contains the flame front from the burner and it can be broken or 'popped' if you have a surge from the burner. When you turn the knob to light the burner, do so, s l o w l y. It should take between 3-5 seconds to turn the valve, lighting the lamp. These lamps have a lot of power and you can actually blow the mantle right off if you just OPEN! the valve as if you were turning on a light. I think it was the second or third time I lit mine, I turned it on too quick and blew the mantle. So that may be the trouble. This should work for you, even if you do happen to get some fuel on the mantle. I've had my lamp for 3 years now and use it every night for about 2/3 of the year. You're at a great place for asking questions, please keep asking. |

Hello again,
I think that may be the issue. Too much fuel is getting into the vaporizer during heat up and it is gasifying too fast. I've actually rinsed out the tank a few times and have verified that fuel is still leaking/entering the vaporizer even though I have the lantern fully off (12o'clock). Does this mean that I received a lantern with a defective #193 or #196. I have just purchased this lantern so I'm guessing the warranty should cover replacing those parts? |

So last night I broke down the lantern and took apart the vaporizer assembly. Turns out the gasket on #193 was not seated properly. I reseated it and pressured tested again with good results. Looks like it must have been a factory error. So now I think I am in business and I quite familiar with (field dressing) the lantern! I look forward to receiving the new mantles and trying her out. Thanks for the help!
